Quitting
It’s time for me to stop. I know I can’t just do it cold turkey, though. I’m tempted to switch to coke and then try to taper off slowly. A friend suggested I just smoke a lot of pot and offered to share his Xanax prescription with me. Which of these is a better idea?
- B.H.
Although some people have used coke to get off crystal (or crystal to get off coke) there are enough similarities with these drugs to make me think it’s a bit like going from the fire to the frying pan… A lot of the time people just go from one problem drug to another and coke is a very expensive habit with real risks associated. That being said, people who smoke pot heavily can have a lot of problems too but it’s probably less risky than coke. Crystal users who smoke pot tend to find that it is such a different high, they are not engaging in the same “party” habits and high risk behaviours (going out, looking for sex, hooking up with other users) and are more likely to be at home, watching TV and eating. If you’re trying to get off crystal these are things your body will probably appreciate, i.e. getting rest and nutrition. If you’re using coke, you’ll probably be more likely to be doing similar things to your crystal using behaviour and may just end up using whatever comes your way. It’s pretty hard to say ‘No’ when the drugs are right in front of you. If you are getting Xanax from your friend, that will help you a lot with feelings of restlessness, irritability and difficulty sleeping that are common to coming off crystal but you should know that tranquillizers like this are highly addictive and really difficult to get off if you become dependent on them - so use them sparingly and with caution. Doctors are usually very careful about prescribing these drugs for good reason.
