HIV
HIV multiple infection is when a guy with HIV gets infected
with a different HIV virus from another HIV+ guy. This second
(or third, or fourth, etc.) virus may be more virulent and
may confer drug resistance. HIV multiple infection may accelerate
HIV progression.
HIV multiple infection has been considered to be a 'theoretical
risk' for many years. It is now believed that a small percentage
of HIV+ men have been 'superinfected' with multiple strains
of HIV. When a guy is ‘superinfected’ with a drug-resistant
virus, resistance can be passed on. When we become resistant
to one drug in a class, we are usually then resistant to all
other drugs in the same class. There are currently only 6
classes of drugs. This may explain some incidences of treatment
failure.
